Hoover's online
Contains information on over 50,000 of the largest or rapidly-growing public and private U.S. companies. Basic information including company address, executives, number of employees, financial summaries, stock prices, news items and Web links to the company is free but more in depth information is available for a fee. This is also an excellent site for industry information.
Fortune Magazine's Top 500 and Global 500
Provides basic information on the top 500 American companies as well as the top 500 companies in the world.
Dun & Bradstreet
Maintains a huge "business database containing information about more than 64 million businesses worldwide including 13 million in the U.S. Basic information is free but in-depth reports and industry reports are available for a fee.
IRIN (Annual Report Resource Centre)
Search a database of over 2000 companies for free online annual reports, quarterlies, fact books and press releases. You can search by ticker symbol or company name.

This list gives the top 500 U.S. private companies and their rankings.
Public Record Databases
This is a very good site for finding information about small American companies (existing and defunct). There is not a good subject list so you have to browse by area. Despite this weakness it is one of the most comprehensive free sources.

This site contains "500,000 company addresses from over 30 European countries, hundreds of company brochures, access to key business information and links to yellow pages throughout Europe". You can search by company name, product or service.
Thomas Register
A list of 155,000 U.S. and Canadian manufacturers. Searchable by company name or product. Gives address, phone number and description of products. Free membership is required.
